    My long time best friends and me try to see each other once or twice a year. A lot less then we would like to but the five of us live in 4 different countries… Last year March we went to the small town of Älmhult in Sweden, that does not sound familiar but the ‘Ikea mother ship’ is located here and one of my friends works there.

    The closest airport to fly to is Copenhagen. As part of the long weekend we spent a night in the Danish capital and it was all we hoped it to be.

    We slept in this nice and affordable small hotel, not too far from the train station and in the very hip and upcoming neighbourhood of Vesterbro(gade). All rooms are nicely decorated with four-poster beds and a comfy bathroom (ask for a room in the new, renovated part). Many even have a small terrace. The breakfast is fresh and delicious, the staff young and friendly and they even rent out bikes, which seemed to be the best way to explore the city.

    Before you leave don’t forget to save some time for shopping at the Copenhagen airport, it is one of the best in Europe.

    At nightAt night: Ruby Bar, Copenhagen, Denmark

    Our one night out in town had to be well spent, so we ended up in this great bar! Not easy to recognise from the outside but this cocktail bar in a 18th-century house is worthwhile the effort. A fantastic bar filled with beautiful people. The place has got several rooms and a kind of ‘home-party’ atmosphere, filled with couches, flowers, a pool table and several bars. Add to this the delicious cocktail and you’ll understand why it was hard to leave.

    EatEat: Café Zirup, Copenhagen, Denmark

    A nice café in the center of town to have breakfast, brunch or lunch. Easy and laid-back, just as we liked it. Apparently it also a good atmosphere later in the day or as a pre-clubbing spot.

    EatEat: Bang & Jensen Café, Copenhagen, Denmark

    Another wonderful bar/lunch spot we came across while exploring the Vesterbro area. It houses in an old pharmacy house and had an immediate ‘yes I like this place’ atmosphere when we stepped in. Old sofa’s and wooden tables in the more loungy back part and red café style chairs and tables in the front, fitting the partly Art Nouveau setting perfectly. Some old paintings still show it was once a pharmacy. Delicious (healthy) food and drinks. Seems also good to go here at night, but I didn’t have a chance to do so yet.

    EatEat: Café Oven Vande, Copenhagen, Denmark

    OvenVande

    After visiting the busy and interesting Christianshavn this is a quiet and laid back café on a corner serving food and drinks all day long. Located at the canal and with a large terrace in summer. We came across these happy young fathers here, having a drink outside with their babies close by.

    ShopShop: Designer Zoo, Copenhagen, Denmark

    A little further down on Vesterbro street a wonderful shop with Danish design, e.g. furniture, ceramics, pottery, glass, jewellery and knitwear. Eight designers work in house and also various well known Danish brands like Scherning and Anne Black are sold. A treat for the eye.
